  • Hot Tip Number 31 - Dealing with a difficult pet sitter. Most pet sitters are professional, pleasant and warm in their approach and this is certainly our experience. However there are times when you encounter a difficult pet sitter who is perhaps rude, curt or downright difficult. Our advice in these circumstances is to not stoop to their level. Try and find out the reason behind their attitude. Have they had a bad day? Have you inadvertently caused offence perhaps by cancelling at short notice without realising the impact upon them? If so try and make allowances, remember that some pet sitters are better at dealing with pets than people.

If a pet sitter continues to be difficult with you then tell them in a firm but polite manner that they have offended you and ask what you can both do to rectify the situation. Sometimes we don't know that we have caused offensive and a quick conversation can resolve the problem.

If their poor attitude persists after this, then you should reconsider whether or not you should continue to use their services. Also if they are registered with a professional body like NARPS, then you could consider reporting them for their behaviour to ensure that others don't have to suffer.

  • Hot Tip Number 36 - How to avoid burn out as a pet sitter. Being a professional pet sitter is extremely rewarding but also very challenging. Balancing pet care, travel, multiple appointments managing difficult customers and walking dogs in all weathers can be stressful at times even for people who are passionate about pets. Bank holidays, Christmas, Easter and Summer Holidays are restful times for many but as a pet sitter these are often your busiest times!

Make sure you book regular breaks at the start of the year before you forget! We advise having a break, even for a weekend every 3 months as a minimum. Also share out the responsibility for your pet business with family members so that it doesn't just fall on your shoulder, it's amazing how even the most reluctant children can get excited about feeding pets in your care! Let your children and partner get involved. It will reduce your workload and leave you feeling more relaxed.

  • Hot Tip Number 36 - Flystrike Prevention. The recent warmer weather means more flies are around increasing the risk of flystrike in rabbits. • Hot Tip Number 35 - Pets In Vehicles. April has brought with it an increase in temperature. With warm weather comes an increased risk to pets that are left inside a vehicle unattended. It is a myth that leaving your vehicle window down will help your call. It will not. Remember that a temperature in a car can reach double that outside. So make sure that you love your pet and do not leave them alone even for a short period in your vehicle. Better still if your pet doesn't cope well with heat make sure that you leave them at home where they can enjoy a nice cool environment and walk them in the evenings when core temperatures have significantly reduced.

  • Hot Tip Number 34 - Does Your Pet Sitter Have First Aid Training? - Your pets are precious and ensuring that their health is in safe hands is essential. Before booking a pet sitter is is a good idea that you check they have a pet related first aid qualification. Dogs and cats in particular have a habit of picking up scratches and scrapes which can then get infected so first aid training is crucial for the small things not just serious medical emergencies.

  • Hot Tip Number 33 - How to complain about a poor pet service. From time to time it is inevitably that circumstances arise where you will need to complain about an aspect of a pet sitter service you and your pets receive. Firstly always go directly to the source. Speak to your pet sitter and explain to them why you have believe that you have received a poor standard of service. If they disagree and you still feel that you have a valid complaint but your concerns in writing and send it to the pet sitter. A professional pet sitter will reply with a response.

If you are still unhappy then take your written reply to the umbrella organisation that they are part of for example Animals at Home and PetPals are franchises. Some pet sitters are members of NARPS a professional pet sitter body. These organisations can often help you to resolve your complaint.

    Tuesday 24th March 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 32 - Communicating with your pet sitter. Communication is key. Pet sitters are busy people. They care not only for your pets but also those of many others and as such they have to operate a diary system to manage the various assignments that they are employed for. Be clear with your pet sitter how you will communicate with them from the outset. Not all pet sitters can give you a 30 minute conversation on the phone. For some text, instant messaging and email are preferred options in the first instance unless you have a more detailed query.

Our advice is to set the expectation from the outset. Think about what works best for you and have a discussion with your pet sitter about the best way to contact them and then find a compromise. agreeing on the best way to communicate from the outset will avoid frustration and upset at a later date.

  • Hot Tip Number 30 - Maintaining your pet's day to day activities whilst you are away. Pets need to be able to follow their regular daily activities when cared for by a pet sitter to avoid them becoming overly stressed. We advise ensuring that you leave detailed instructions of your pet's food, toilet, exercise and play routines.

Better still send an email in advance to your chosen pet sitter so that they have a clear idea before they arrive for their first visit to ensure that they put ample time aside to complete the required tasks. Get it right and you will be greeted by happy contented pets on your return.

    Friday 20th March 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 29 - Pet Visit Arrangements. Are your precious pets getting the full benefit of a visit? Pet Sitters visit times are rarely standard. Before you agree to use the services of a pet sitter you need to ask about the length of the visit they will offer and the basic routine that they will provide. Do not assume that a pet sitter will provide the same standard of love and warmth as you will as their owner.

Whilst many pet sitters are themselves passionate about pets, not all are. Ensure that you agree a contract which has the terms and conditions clearly stated. Ensure that this includes not only meeting the basic needs of your pets such as feeding and toilet arrangements but also stimulation time through play.

It may be worth paying for extra time to ensure your pets needs are well catered for. Above all make sure that if you are paying for an hour of a pet sitter's time, your pet gets the full hour that they deserve.

    Thursday 19th March 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 28 - Pet Sitters and key security. As many pet sitters are likely to care for your pets inside your own home it is important to think about the security arrangements for your keys. For example will you arrange to hand over a key and then have the pet sitter post it back through your door when you arrive home? If you are a frequent customer will your pet sitter have a dedicated key and if so how will they store it securely at their own home?

Increasingly people are resorting to the use of discrete wall mounted key safes with an access code that only releases the key once the correct code is entered.

    Wednesday 18th March 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 27 - Is your pet sitter safe? Who you let into your home and care for your pets is an important consideration and because of this it is normally a good idea to ensure that any pet sitter you choose is DBS checked. DBS stands for the Disclosure and Barring Service. It is formal document that confirms that the individual concerned does not have criminal convictions and if they do it will state on any documentation what those convictions are to enable you to make an informed decision.

For example someone may have a conviction for fighting 20 years ago as a young person. Do not be afraid to ask your pet sitter for a copy of their DBS documentation and should they be unable to produce one, then you should proceed with caution.

  • Hot Tip Number 26 - Pet medication and pet sitters. Many pet sitters are now trained to administer pet medication but it is crucial that you check the qualifications of your chosen pet sitter before you go away. Sometimes doing this face to face can feel confrontational so the easiest way to do this is to ask the pet sitter to bring their qualifications with them when they come to meet you and your pets. Most Pet Sitters will have a portfolio of certificates, qualifications and insurance documents so do not be afraid to ask.

    Saturday 28th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 25 - Pet Toys. Pets often love toys that make a noise or can be easily ripped. It provides them with a sense of achievement and reward. It is a good idea to leave clear instructions with your pet sitter about which toys your pets particularly like as it will help them to feel settled and relaxed whilst you are away. Remember helping to maintain your pets routine whilst in the care of a pet sitter is crucial to reduce stress levels in your pets.

    Friday 27th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 24 - Toxic plants. Pet owners need to be aware that a number of plants can be toxic to pets especially dogs including; Narcissus and hyacinth bulbs, oleander, rhododendrons, cyclamen, amaryllis, yew and chrysanthemum. These can cause mild or severe symptoms in your precious pets so it is important to be aware of what is planted in your garden and also it is crucial that you check out whether your pet sitter is aware of this information if they take your pet for walks.

    Thursday 26th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 23 - Pet Sitter Information File. We strongly advise any customers using the services of a pet sitter to create an individual pet information file for each of your pets. This is a quick reference guide which you can leave with your pet sitter and will provide a host of useful information crucial to the care of your pets. You should include; feeding habits, frequency of walks, frequency of replacing pet bedding or litter trays, pet allergies, toys your pet likes to play with, places your pet likes to go for walks, pet medication, things that your pet does not like.

  • We have added Home Comforts in Bedfordshire to our pet sitter directory. Find out more about the excellent service that they offer. Click Here to View More Information About This Pet Sitter

    Wednesday 25th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 22 - Payments to Pet Sitters. Whilst pet sitters may prefer cash for the services that they offer you, we would strongly recommend that you make payments through a form that offers an audit trail, such as a direct bank transfer, cheque or PayPal. Always ask for a receipt for the services offered. The reason that it is important to be cautious in terms of payment methods is that in the unlikely event that a problem arises whilst your pet is being cared for you need to be able to demonstrate that you accessed the services of that specific pet sitter.

    Monday 16th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 21 - Listen to your pet sitter. A good pet sitter is not just there to provide you with a service for your pets, but they are also therefore to care for your pet and raise concerns about the welfare of your pet. It is easy to respond well to positive feedback but a good pet sitter will also offer you constructive feedback on the care of your pets if they identify a problem. Listen to them. Very often pet sitters are experienced professionals with many years of knowledge to draw upon. If they raise a concern do your research and look into the issue.

    Sunday 15th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 20 - Protecting against pet theft. It is sad to think but pets are also likely to be a target of theft as much as anything else. This is especially true if you have a rare breed or an unusual pet. Buying a new pet can be an expensive business if you go to a reputable breeder and there are some who sadly will see your beautiful pet as an opportunity to make quick cash. A simple measure is to get a microchip for your pet. These are a superb anti theft tool as the microchip will provide unique information and help the Police to quickly identify who they belong to. Remember to keep garden gates locked and never leave your pet unsupervised outside of the house, for example whilst you go into a shop.

    Saturday 14th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 19 - Choosing the right pet. Caring for a pet is a significant undertaking and it is crucial that you do some homework prior to deciding on the right pet for you. Think about the hours you work and the impact that will have on your pet. What about those that live in your home, how will they feel about a new addition. You will also need to think about where they are responsible enough to care for your pet if you are not able to be around. Take your time and do not rush.

    Friday 13th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 18 - Pet Sitter Versus Kennels. A pet sitter may cost more money but the benefits can far outweigh your pets being required to stay in kennels. Kennels can be a stressful experience for some pets, surrounded by a large number of other pets each of whom are competing for attention. A pet sitter offers a personal service for you and your pets in their own home environment, reducing stress levels whilst you are away and maintaining stability.

A professional pet sitter may not cost as much as you think and we advise shopping around to find a pet sitter that balances cost against understanding the needs of your pets.

    Monday 9th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 17 - Pets Contingency Planning - A key overlooked element is that of what will happen if your pet needs to access the service of a vet. Does your pet sitter have the emergency contact details of the vet or do they have their own arrangements established with a vets practice. It is always best to allow pets to access the services of a vet that they are familiar with as it can help to reduce stress. Make sure that your pet sitter has a clear understanding of what you would like to happen should your pet become unwell. It will save you lots of stress and worry at a later date in the likely event that you need to apply this contingency plan.

    Sunday 8th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 16 - Check business liability insurance. The vast majority of pet sitters are professional and do an excellent job. However you should ask to see proof of a pet sitters business liability insurance. Just because a pet sitter states that they have it should not lead you to the conclusion that they do. Check the date and the name of the person it is issued to. Remember if you fail to check this information and a subsequent claim is required to cater for the needs of your pet it could cost you a substantial sum of money.

    Saturday 7th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 15 - Price versus compatibility. Price really is not everything. Choose your pet sitter based on how compatible they are caring for your pets. Invite them for a visit prior to you go away and observe how the interact with your pets. A good pet sitter will offer more than just compliance with a feeding and walking regime. They will provide your pet with human contact and social interaction whilst you are away. They will also spot if your pet veterinary attention. Treat your chosen pet sitter as an extended family member and they will offer your pets the best possible care whilst you are away.

    Friday 6th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 14 - Information is key. Leave your pet sitter with a key summary of essential duties. It it crucial to give this to your chosen pet sitter when they visit prior to you going away. Avoid long rambling documents, remember that a pet sitter may have 3 or four visits to complete that day so keeping it concise will ensure the best outcome for your pets.

    Thursday 5th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 13 - Building a strong professional relationship with your pet sitter is crucial to ensure that your pets receive the best possible service. It is all about basic manners. Treat your pet sitter as you would expect to be treated. Remember if you are rude or obnoxious then the pet sitter will be caring for your pets and this may effect the service that you receive even if that pet sitter is the Consummate professional. Forming a strong working relationship with your pet sitter will ensure that your pets needs are appropriately cared for and foster a better understanding of their needs.

    Wednesday 4th February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 12 - To tip or not to tip. Many people contact me to ask about whether or not they should tip their pet sitter. It is always a difficult question and it is down to personal choice. As a customer you are already paying for a pet sitter service and my view is that you should not have to tip someone for providing you with a basic service, even if they are good at what they do. If you do tip, then the pet sitter needs to go above and beyond, perhaps staying later to deal with an unexpected situation or offering additional contact time with your pets as a result of you arriving late. Most professional pet sitters will not expect a tip.

    Tuesday 3rd February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 11 - A professional pet sitter will have a clearly written contract for you to sign when you access their services. Make sure you read it and ensure that you are clear about their responsibilities as well as your own. Do not be afraid to ask questions about details that you are unsure about. Never sign a contract for services that you are not sure about. You may also want to add in additional duties and responsibilities based upon the specific needs of your pets including medication routines, food preferences, daily care routines etc.

    Monday 2nd February 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 10 - Every reputable pet sitter should have a contingency plan in case they are prevented from caring for the needs of your pet whilst you are away either through health difficulties or in the event of severe weather. It is worth checking with your pet sitter before you book to find out how they will deal with such an eventuality to ensure that your pets are not neglected should the worst case scenario occur.

  • Read our new exclusive interview with Eleanor from Sitters4Pets and find out about her total dedication to caring for your pet and home and her inspiring story of how she overcame difficulties to get started with her fabulous pet sitter business. Click Here To Read The Interview

  • Hot Tip Number 9 - Ask your pet sitter to send you daily text, email and picture updates so that you can monitor the care of your precious pets. A dedicated pet sitter will be willing to provide these as a standard part of the service that they provide to give you that extra peace of mind whilst you are away.

    30th January 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 8 - Seek verification of any qualifications your pet sitter claims to have. Do not simply rely on what you are told. You should ask for these when you arrange an initial meeting with a pet sitter to introduce them to your pets and home. Your pet sitter should be able to provide original colour copies of their accreditations and qualifications. Don't be embarrassed to ask, reputable pet sitters are quite comfortable providing these.

    29th January 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 7- Take your time picking a pet sitter for your pets. Most reputable pet sitters will offer you a free visit to assess the environment and to get to know your pets. These are extremely useful for assessing how a prospective pet sitter interacts with your precious pet. Matching a pet sitter with the character of your pets is crucial.

    28th January 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 6 - Always take out references on any pet sitter before using their services. Remember that this person will be coming into your home and caring for your precious pets. Reputable pet sitters will be willing to provide references, so make sure you call them and check out their performance.

  • Hot Tip Number 5 - Take your time picking a pet sitter for your pets. Most reputable pet sitters will offer you a free visit to assess the environment and to get to know your pets. These are extremely useful for assessing how a prospective pet sitter interacts with your precious pet. Matching a pet sitter with the character of your pets is crucial.

    27th January 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 4 - Customer service is key. If you contact a pet sitter to enquire about their services then a professional reputable business should respond to your enquiry within a 24 hour period. If not then in general this may give a glimpse of the standard of service that you are likely to receive. Of course sometimes difficulties arise meaning that a prompt response is prevented, but strive for good customer service as a measure of the suitability for a prospective pet sitter to care for your precious pets.

  • Hot Tip Number 3 - When choosing a pet sitter think about booking ahead. Often if you leave hiring a pet sitter until the last minute this is likely to cost you more than booking ahead. On average booking ahead by 8 weeks can save you up to 25%. If you book over the phone make sure you get any promised discounts in writing through an email reply for example. Also if you use the same pet sitter on a regular basis try to negotiate a preferential rate as repeat customers are highly prized by pet sitters, so use it to your advantage as a customer.

  • Hot Tip Number 2 - When setting up your pet sitter business think carefully about what makes you stand out from your competitors. Can you offer an enhanced service, or a discount for caring for multiple pets? Think about client satisfaction both for the pets in your care and the humans who own them. Listen and respond to client feedback as this will help you to identify additional services to improve the experience of your clients.

    20th January 2015

  • Hot Tip Number 1 - When choosing a pet sitter opt for a good character match and not purely on price. Whilst price is important you often get a feel quite quickly if a pet sitter is a suitable individual for managing your precious pet, some pets need a gentle character whilst others need a strong minded pet sitter who can reign them in when they get too excited. Invite 3 pet sitters around to give you a quote and then pick the best, it will give you confidence whilst you are away that your pet is in good hands. Never use a pet sitter without meeting them in person first.
